Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior political figure commented the attack made him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
